What is this art therapy anyhow?
It is a way of helping you to come to terms with difficult feelings and thoughts through using art materials – paint and clay or anything that can be used to express yourself – giving shape to thoughts and feelings. It’s a bit like playing.
Can you tell what I’m thinking – read my mind, thoughts etc by looking at my drawings?
No, definitely not. If you want you can explore the meanings of your images with the art therapist - this can be fun and sometimes you can learn things about yourself.
How does this help me feel better or cope better?
Sometimes it just helps to open up and share things, letting feelings out by making art about them, means you are not storing feelings up which may lead to an angry outburst. Sometimes it helps just doing something and seeing what it looks like.
But I’m not good at drawing or stuff so I’m not sure if it would suit me
Art therapy is not about being good at art. Sometimes it can be difficult to put feelings into words – it’s easier to use art. Even a scribble, a doodle or scrawl can express how you feel – The art therapist won’t judge you.
Is it going to be private?
The art therapist will not give your name, details or any information about you to anyone without your permission. If the therapist has reason to believe that you or someone you talked about was in danger they might want to tell someone, if this happened they would explain to you what they plan to do and why.
